Family Medicine Residency – Teaching Sites

Our main teaching sites for the standard Family Medicine Residency Program are the ECU Family Medicine Center and ECU Health Medical Center, which serve a diverse patient population from Greenville and surrounding communities.  Rural program residents also spend considerable amount of time during PGY-1at these sites, with the addition of rural community main teaching sites during PGY-2 and PGY-3.  Rural residents that MATCH to Ahoskie have continuity clinic at Roanoke Chowan Community Health Center and also train at Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital.  Rural residents that MATCH to Duplin have continuity clinic at Goshen Medical Center Beulaville and also train at Vidant Duplin Hospital.  Standard and Rural residents will also have opportunities to train at other community sites.

ECU Family Medicine Center

Much of our training takes place in the ECU Family Medicine Center. The Center, eastern North Carolina’s foremost patient-centered medical home and medical training facility, provides the best in healthcare to a 29-county region in eastern North Carolina.

All Family Medicine divisions and services are housed in the 112,000 square foot facility. The facility offers 60 exam rooms, dedicated sports medicine and geriatrics modules, three minor surgery/procedure rooms, ultrasound, counseling rooms, physical therapy, radiology, lab, and pharmacy services.

Services offered include urgent care, primary care, prenatal care, minor surgical procedures, sports medicine, geriatrics, family and individual counseling, patient education and nutrition. Inpatient and nursing home care are also provided to Family Medicine patients.

Residents, medical students, and other learners thrive in the rich clinical and educational environment of the Family Medicine Center. By design, the building facilitates interaction and communication. Family Medicine faculty interact with residents, medical students and other learners in both the clinical and classroom environments. There are two precepting rooms in the clinical areas, classrooms, and auditorium, and six conference/meeting rooms. Residents have administrative offices located near the faculty physician offices. Like faculty, each resident has a computer at their work desk.

All exam rooms and the resident office are furnished with computers for easy access to our inpatient and outpatient electronic medical records. The Family Medicine Center, specialty clinics within ECU Physicians, and ECU Health Medical Center all use Epic EHR.

Our family medicine center cares for a primarily undeserved, racially diverse population, as well as a mixture of hospital and university employees and their families. Our patients serve as our greatest resource by providing a wide variety of disease processes and pathology from which to learn.
