Inpatient Services Section

Led by faculty that enjoy inpatient medicine, our department runs one of the largest family medicine inpatient services in the nation. Our service ensures the ideal amount of workforce to extend not only high quality care to our patients, but also a high quality of teaching to over 50 residents and fellows and over 100 medical and physician assistant students each year.

Service Details

  • We have our very own 36 bed family medicine general telemetry unit
  • We practice within a 900 bed tertiary care hospital
  • Few if any patients require a transfer to another hospital
  • Ample inpatient ancillary resources including Pharm Ds, discharge planners, social workers, and therapists to help our patients
  • Our service routinely remains the primary team even when an appropriate subspecialty is consulting
  • Our hospital highly values our continuity, inpatient, and transitional care skills
  • We have a long history of very competitive national data for length of stay, readmission rate, and patient satisfaction scores

Residents

  • Residents never work more than a 14 hour inpatient shift during their entire 3 years of training.
  • We employ experienced advance level practitioners that interact seamlessly with our service to mentor our learners and ensure no learner is overburdened

Electronic Health Record (EHR)

  • Our service designed and use efficient templates for all of our clinician documentation including H&Ps, consults, progress notes, procedures, and discharge summaries
  • We designed and maintain the Best Practice smart order sets that are used in our hospital
  • EHR can be accessed via the web offsite, including via smartphone
  • All ECU outpatient clinics use the same EHR
    • allows an inpatient provider to easily review the outpatient chart and vice versa
  • Prescriptions are routinely done electronically
  • Patients are able to review their medical history, including labs and radiology, within hours of completion via the web-based portal
