Sports Medicine Fellowship – Teaching Sites
Student Health Services
East Carolina University Student Health Services is a primary healthcare facility located conveniently on central campus. The sports medicine clinic at SHS involves:
- comprehensive care for all ECU varsity and club student-athletes
- musculoskeletal care for the ECU student body
- disordered eating evaluation and management
Digital x-ray, laboratory services, pharmacy, nutritional counseling and more are available on-site.
Ward Sports Medicine Building
Ward Sports Medicine Building is located in the heart of the athletic complex on the campus of East Carolina University and houses the main athletic training room in addition to the Human Performance and Biomechanics Laboratories.
The sports medicine fellow spends 1 half-day primary care sports medicine clinics plus 2 hours of orthopedic sports medicine clinics per week at this site providing comprehensive student-athlete care including:
- satellite access to our SHS electronic medical record (Medicat) with:
- scheduled appointments
- an ability to document current visits and review prior visits, outside imaging and referral reports, lab results, plain radiographs and advanced imaging
- performance of simple office procedures such as:
- suturing
- I&D’s
- joint and soft tissue injections/aspirations
- IV fluid administration
- diagnostic/interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound
Orthopaedics East & Sports Medicine Center
The home of the main orthopedics practice in the county, this facility houses:
- orthopedic sports medicine clinics
- physical therapy
- x-ray
- MRI
The fellow spends two half days per week x 8 weeks with our peripheral faculty colleagues in orthopedic sports medicine clinic plus opportunities to:
- attend select surgical cases
- gain additional experience with casting
ECU Family Medicine Center
The ECU Family Medicine Center is located on the Brody School of Medicine campus and is the site for the ECU family medicine residency and sports medicine division. The fellow will spend two to three half days per week working with primary care sports medicine faculty at this location with the following opportunities:
- comprehensive care for the young athlete
- musculoskeletal care for patients of all ages
- concussion management
- fracture management
- fluoroscopic guided injections
- diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound
- custom orthotic fabrication
This is also the site where the fellow will see continuity clinic patients. On-site laboratory, digital x-ray, EKG, exercise treadmill stress testing, pulmonary function testing, physical therapy, behavioral health, nutrition, and pharmacotherapy are all available.
