Sports Medicine Fellowship – Curriculum

The Department of Family Medicine at East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine offers a comprehensive fellowship designed to support the advanced education and training of primary care physicians in the field of sports medicine.

  • The fellow will work directly alongside core faculty during their longitudinal primary care sports medicine clinics located at:
    • community and academic based offices
    • university student health center
    • athletic training rooms
  • Intermixed into the longitudinal clinical education are block rotation experiences with peripheral faculty members in the disciplines of:
    • orthopedics
    • musculoskeletal radiology
    • physical medicine and rehab
    • sports nutrition
    • physical therapy
    • cardiology
  • Inherent in our approach is a commitment to provide an education that supports future academically successful and active professionals in the field of primary care sports medicine. We accomplish this is by:
    • A comprehensive musculoskeletal ultrasound training curriculum.
    • A weekly academic morning sports medicine curriculum.
    • A monthly musculoskeletal radiology conference and sports medicine seminar series.
    • Support and participation in local, regional, and national sports medicine conferences.
  • Additional opportunities during one’s Fellowship include:
    • Involvement in ongoing IRB approved research projects during the academic year.
    • Scholarly writing for journals and/book chapters.
    • Additional training in advanced injection techniques including ultrasound and fluoroscopic guided injections, fracture care, custom orthotic fabrication and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment.
    • Team physician responsibilities including providing comprehensive care for the East Carolina University Pirates, a Division I NCAA athletics program with approximately 450 intercollegiate athletes in football, men’s and women’s basketball , soccer, baseball, softball, track and field, and tennis, among others.
  • Upon completion, the fellow will be eligible to sit for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine (CAQSM) exam.
