Sports Medicine Fellowship – Our Program
The goal of the Sports Medicine Fellowship program at East Carolina University is to train competent physicians to deliver and coordinate the highest quality care for athletes and active individuals of all ages and abilities.
During the academic year the fellow will be trained to develop the clinical competencies needed to diagnose and manage medical illnesses and injuries related to sports and exercise. Clinical experiences will include injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, return to play criteria, management of acute and chronic illness or injury, event coverage and rehabilitation.
Specific program highlights include:
- accredited program since 2001
- unopposed fellowship program in an academic environment with teaching, research and many other scholarly activities available
- extensive NCAA Division I team physician experience
- diagnostic and interventional musculoskeletal ultrasound curriculum with abundant clinical experience opportunities
The educational and clinical opportunities are designed to allow the fellow to assume progressive responsibility for patient care while working with athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons and other providers to create a comprehensive and team approach to the management of the patient. The clinical faculty are committed to providing didactic learning as well as clinical opportunities and this is viewed as an integral part of the required curriculum for this program.
