Geriatrics Fellowship – Our Program
The Geriatric Fellowship program at East Carolina University was one of the first in the United States. This program was established in 1984 and was accredited by The Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) in 1988. Each year, we take up to three fellows. We are approaching 65 graduates. All graduates taking the CAQ exam in the past ten years have passed it. In 2011, we were awarded “Accreditation with Commendation” from the ACGME.
Our well-established fellowship program in an academic environment allows fellows to achieve goals inclusive of teaching, research, and other scholarly activities:
- Individualized educational approach based on learners’ career development goals
- State-of-the-art independent Monk Ambulatory Geriatric Center and nursing home facility dedicated to inter-professional education and comprehensive geriatric patient care
- Consultation clinics including Fall Prevention clinics, working with Allied Health faculty and an interdisciplinary team
- Full access to subspecialty services in a 900+ bed teaching hospital, with great opportunities of working with Hematology, Psychiatry, Sports Medicine/Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Hospice Palliative Medicine and more
- Participate and present at The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine (AMDA) and American Geriatrics Society (AGS) national conferences
- Experience working closely with our colleagues in Hospice-Palliative Care for outpatient and inpatient Palliative Care consultations and Hospice patient care
- Participate in interprofessional education at Cypress Glen Continuous Care Retirement Community
The education and clinical opportunities are designed to allow the fellow to assume progressive responsibility for geriatric patient care and to develop a comprehensive team-based approach to management of these patients. The faculty provides didactic learning as well as clinical precepting.
